You probably know it, but combining broken tools gives you a 5% durability bonus. I don't know why I didn't fix this earlier. The above is technically incorrect. Minecraft uses fancy math to come up with something close-ish to that number. Minetest Game actually uses a set percentage to make it simpler though.

Inaccurate, to spawn mobs, you need to be at low HP. If you're not at low enough hp to die during the first damage you take from the void mobs won't spawn as you'll be too far away. Therefore because Kratos took multiple rounds of void damage, mobs won't spawn.

you skipped your process of having to wait for a zombie with a shovel to spawn in, get the shovel with enough durability and then wait for it to snow, don’t sell yourself short
